Project Fourteen
Blue
Throughout the history of art, blue has been revered as a very special colour.
Ancient civilizations largely ignored it, but in the medieval and renaissance period the use of costly ultramarine pigments grew in popularity to depict divinity as seen in paintings of the virgin Mary.
As synthetic pigments such as Prussian blue and Cobalt blue became more widely available, artists developed a range of applications for its specific hues.
Picasso famously delivered compelling works of sadness and melancholy in his ‘blue period’. whilst impressionist painters used blue to create effects of light and movement.
It is interesting to think that most of our world is covered by blue - The sea and the sky, so it is no wonder that blue is a popular colour. It is considered to represent stability, reliability and sincerity, but is is also peaceful and tranquil with overtones of coldness.
In cultural circles blue is twinned with depression seen by musicians singing the blues.
I have always liked blue and found comfort in its presence through the years.
In this project I will make blue the focus through a range of themes, concepts and ideas.
Journey with me into the blue.
